Course Description:

Students will learn about hardware, software and the interface between the two. Students will also explore issues related to the influence of technology on society and the environment. Critical thinking and creative problem solving will be an integral part of the course as students work through various challenges and activities.

Units of Study:

1. What’s In the Lab? Introduction to Computers and Technology
2. The Internet and Beyond - Networking
3. Decisions, decisions - Boolean Logic
4. Creating your own tools - Programming (PHP)
5. Picture Perfect - Digital Images

Throughout the course students will look at issues related to technology, which may include topics such as environmental impacts, social media, ubiquitous computing, and relationships between computer science and other disciplines. Students will also be expected to work on their typing skills throughout the course, by setting personal goals throughout the term.

Evaluation:

Students will be evaluated based on tests, quizzes, in-class activities, and assignments. Evaluation will take place online (on the computer) and offline (for example, on paper), as well as individually and as a part of a group. Late Assignments/Missed Tests:

Students are expected to hand in assignments at the beginning of class on the day that they are due, unless otherwise specified. Late assignments may be subject to a mark penalty or a mark of zero. If in doubt, speak to your teacher in advance of the due date. It is your responsibility to get your assignments in on time!
If you know that you will be away on the date of a test, you must make arrangements in advance. If you are sick, you should expect to write the test on the day that you return to school. For more information regarding the school’s policy on absences, see the parent handbook.

Extra Help:

Extra help is available by appointment and may at times be recommended by the teacher. Drop-in extra help may be available later in the year. Ask your teacher for more details.
